Thyroid test is a medical test to check the secretion level of thyroid hormone, thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH), T3 (triiodothyronine) and T4 (thyroxine). TSH hormone release by Pituitary gland and T3 & T4 hormone release by Thyroid gland.

By Thyroid test results chart we know that t3, t4 & tsh hormone are in normal range or not. Thyroid specialist Doctor take treatment decision on the bases of these hormone level.

If the thyroid hormone T3 and T4 secretion is high and TSH secretion is low then thyroid type is Hyperthyroidism.

And if T3 & T4 secretion is low and TSH secretion is High then thyroid type is Hypothyroidism.

T3, T4 TSH normal range and Function :-

t3, t4 tsh normal range depend on age and sex of person. These hormone range not affected before taking food and after taking food. But mostly Thyroid test done before taking food with empty stomach. We can understand it by general range value.

(a). T3 (triiodothyronine) :-

T3 hormone main function is development of body muscles and brain and control the heart rate . Normal Range of T3 hormone is 80-220 nanogram/decilitre.

(b). T4 (thyroxine) :-

This hormone control the metabolic rate, energy level in the body and body temperature. T4 normal range is 5.4-11.5 microgram/decilitre.

(c). Tsh (thyroid stimulating hormone) :-

This hormone released by Pituitary gland which control (stimulating) thyroid gland to produce T3 and T4 hormone. Tsh normal range is 0.5-4.5 Milli-international units per litre (mlu/L).

Thyroid test at home :-

We can check 3 types of thyroid tests at our home one of them is mercury Temperature meter test (Barney test).

(A). Barney Test :-

To do this, first of all, by shaking the thermometer, drop the mercury below 35 °C or 95F and keep it by your head before sleeping at night.

Upon waking up in the morning, without getting out of bed, take off your upper cloth and put the thermometer in your armpit and leave it for 10 minutes, then take it out and take its reading.

This above both step you have to do regular 4-5 days in same time in morning for better and accurate thyroid test result.

(i). If the temperature is between 36.5C (97.7F) and 36.8C (98.2F) then the thyroid gland is functioning properly.

(ii). If the temperature is below 36.5C (97.7F), the thyroid is working slower than normal. It is the symptoms of Hypothyroidism.

(iii). And If the temperature is more than 36.8C (98.2F), then the thyroid is working rapidly or there is some kind of infection in the body. This is the symptoms of hyperthyroidism.

(B). By Thyroid Gland movement test :-

In this Thyroid test at home we require 1 cup of drinking water and a mirror. You have to just sit infornt of mirror and sip water. While sipping water just see on mirror on neck you find the movement and shape of thyroid gland. If you feel that there is some change in size and shape of thyroid gland. You can go for doctor consultant and medical thyroid test.

(C). By Thyroid test kits :-

You can also take blood sample by thyroid test kits at home. Then you have to send sample to nearest laboratory or test kit manufacture or laboratory collect sample from home. But it is very time consuming process. Some kits for Thyroid test at home are Letsgetchecked, Everwell, Imaware etc.

Whenever you go to the doctor for thyroid treatment, first T3, T4 and TSH hormones are tested from your blood sample. If thyroid hormone level is more disbalanced then Doctor refer some more thyroid test for identifying root cause of hormone disbalanced.

1. T4, free T4, & T3 thyroid test :-

This is the primary thyroid test in which measures the level of thyroid hormones (T4 and T3) in your blood. This is the first step to diagnose thyroid disease type either it is Hyperthyroidism or Hypothyroidism.

2. Thyroid stimulating hormone (Tsh) level test :-

Thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) is a pituitary gland hormone that stimulates the thyroid gland to produce hormones. The normal level of TSH hormone is 0.5-4.5 mIu/L. TSH levels higher or lower than this can increase the risk of thyroid disease.

3. Ultrasound :-

In this thyroid test, the size of the thyroid gland is tested and any changes in the shape of the thyroid gland are detected. Main reason of thyroid gland shape change is Thyroid nodules which are lumps in your neck. Ultrasound test indicate doctor if the nodules are more likely to be cancerous.

This test is painless and done by transducer machinery equipment. It scan your neck by sound waves and make pictures of thyroid gland. This test identifies thyroid gland shape  in half an hour.

4. Thyroid scan and uptake :-

Which area of the thyroid gland is causing over activity easily findout in this thyroid test. Due to over activity some parts of thyroid gland inactive and damage.

5. CT or MRI scans :-

If there is any type of pituitary tumor in the thyroid gland, then this thyroid test is very effective.

6. Cholesterol test :-

Low cholesterol can be a sign of a high metabolic rate, in which your body consumes more energy through cholesterol.
