1. What is Thyroid :-
Thyroid is a gland in our body. Its shape is like a small butterfly. The thyroid gland is located in the lower part of the neck, on the sac.
This gland makes thyroid hormone which controls all the functions of the whole body. The main function of thyroid hormone is to control the metabolic rate, energy level in the body, body temperature and heart rate.
The thyroid produces stimulating hormone (TSH), T3 (triiodothyronine) and T4 (thyroxine) hormones to control the metabolic rate. As long as the thyroid hormone is secreted in the right amount, the balance of these T3 (triiodothyronine) and T4 (thyroxine) hormones is maintained. And the metabolic rate, which we call the BMR index, remains under control. There is a balance of energy levels in the body.
But when the thyroid makes too much or too little of the thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH), T3 (triiodothyronine) and T4 (thyroxine), it is called Thyroid disease. Due to which the body has a lot of adverse effects.
We can understand the normal range of these hormones in the body from the following chart.
2. Types of thyroid :-
Thyroid is 2 types which is based on secretion of thyroid hormone.
(A). Hypothyroidism :-
When the secretion of T3 (triiodothyronine) and T4 (thyroxine) hormones is less, this condition is called Hypothyroidism. In Hypothyroidism the metabolic rate is very slow and less energy is consumed in the body due to which your body weight increases very fast and joint pain, infertility and heart disease problems start.
(B). Hyperthyroidism :-
When there is an excessive secretion of T3 (triiodothyronine) and T4 (thyroxine) hormones, this condition is called Hyperthyroidism disease. Main effect of hyperthyroidism is, the rate of metabolism is faster and more energy is consumed in the body, due to which your body weight is reduced very fast. And also start health diseases like anxiety, increased appetite and fast heartbeat.
